Question:
Will trademark registration need to be changed after the launch of the new UI No. format? Will I need to renew registration of a trademark myself, or will it be done automatically? And if I need to do it myself, will I have to pay a fee for it? Who can I contact about any related questions?
Answer:
1. A foreign national’s UI No. is not among the particulars required for entry in the trademark register, and will not be publicly disclosed. Therefore, under the provisions of Article 38 Paragraph 2 of the Trademark Act and the mutatis mutandis application of Article 24 of the same Act, no renewal of registration is required.
2. However, for clarity as to the subject of rights, a trademark owner whose UI No. is changed may send notification of this, with relevant documentation, to the Intellectual Property Office, for updating their basic information, and will not need to pay a fee.
3. If you have any questions about this, you can inquire further at the Trademark Service Desk (call 02-2376-7570).

Question:
After the change to the new UI No.’s, will company registrations need to be changed? Will I need to renew the registration myself, or will it be done automatically? And if I need to do it myself, will I have to pay a fee? Who can I contact about any related questions?
Answer:
After the change to the new UI No.’s, companies can decide for themselves whether to apply to change their registration, with the company’s responsible officer making the application (if no such, then the persons concerned doing it themselves). There will be a special fee-exemption period from January 2, 2021 to January 2, 2022, during which fee payment will be waived for such part of company registrations as are consequent to the issuance of the new UI No.’s. If you have any questions about this, you can call 412-1166 (add 02 when using a mobile phone).

Question:
After I change to the new UI No., will I be able to use it to shop on e-commerce platforms? Who can I contact about any related questions?
Answer:
1. On most e-commerce platforms, members of the public do not need to use their UI No. to register for membership (most use email or mobile phone), and after becoming members, use a registered account password for logging on. Hence, the change of UI No. will not affect use of these platforms.
2. The minority of shopping platforms that do require a UI No. for registration will adjust their systems to accommodate the new UI No.’s for foreign nationals, and this also will not affect people’s shopping on e-commerce platforms.
3. If you have any related questions, please first ask the e-commerce platforms, and if you still have questions, you can call the MOEA (02-2321-2200 ext. 8751, ask for Ms. Wu).

Who can I contact about any related questions?
