This year’s award-winning teams included participants from the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Maldives, Bangladesh, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Nepal, and India, as well as Hong Kong and mainland China. Behind every dream is a story of building a life and putting down roots in Taiwan. Some teams incorporated Taiwan’s night market culture into board games, while others shared the cuisine of their home countries through food trucks. Another team used virtual reality technology to recreate attractions in Singapore, offering new and diverse ways to promote cultural exchange.
Liu Miao-ching, originally from Kolkata, India, joined her children Liu Chang-yung and Liu Huan-ni in pursuing the idea of “creating no more waste for the planet.” They transformed discarded furniture and used building materials into new pieces of furniture and repurposed waste clay to build a traditional Indian tandoor, putting environmental sustainability into practice in their everyday lives. Meanwhile, Shoko Igatani from Japan and Chen Li from mainland China used the flute and piano to promote music, donating part of their proceeds to new immigrant organizations. They also brought music into elementary schools, giving children opportunities to experience it firsthand and turning melodies performed on stage into concrete action that gives back to society.
Hong Kong new immigrants Yeh Chao-chen and Chiang Wei-yin, a married couple, took their cameras to Kinmen, Penghu, Taitung, and other locations to document people from Taiwan and Hong Kong who have made their way to outlying islands and rural communities, capturing how diverse cultures have taken root in Taiwan.
The MOI emphasized that the Dream-Building Program for New Immigrants and Their Children continues to provide a platform for new immigrants to pursue their dreams, helping them put their strengths to use and transform creative ideas into action. Videos documenting this year’s award recipients and their journeys toward realizing their dreams are now available in the Video section of the National Immigration Agency website (https://www.immigration.gov.tw/5385/7353/51883/85234/) and the Video section of IFI Network (https://ifi.immigration.gov.tw/wSite/lp?ctNode=37999&xq_xCat=20&mp=1). Everyone is invited to watch the videos and discover the dreams and initiatives of new immigrant families in Taiwan.
