This year’s Lunar New Year holiday spans nine consecutive days, and a significant surge in inbound and outbound passenger traffic is expected at major airports nationwide. To maintain orderly immigration clearance and service quality, the Border Affairs Corps of the National Immigration Agency (NIA) has deployed additional personnel to frontline immigration inspection duties and urges travelers to make greater use of the automated immigration clearance system, e-Gate, to speed up processing and reduce waiting times. To further facilitate parents traveling with children in using e-Gate, the NIA has set up “family-friendly counters” adjacent to e-Gate lanes, allowing family travelers accompanied by children to enjoy a considerate and convenient immigration clearance service. To create a warm and festive Lunar New Year atmosphere, the NIA has specially produced a limited-edition 2026 Year of the Horse red envelope, symbolizing auspicious wishes of prosperity and good fortune. These red envelopes will be distributed to arriving and departing travelers at airports and harbors nationwide during the Lunar New Year holiday, sharing the joy and blessings of the season with the public. The NIA noted that the Lunar New Year is the most important traditional holiday for the public and also a peak period for family travel, and hopes that through thoughtful services and creative outreach, travelers can experience the festive spirit even while clearing immigration.Clear Immigration in 10 Seconds—The New Generation e-Gate Is Fast and Convenient
The NIA further explained that the new generation e-Gate features an intuitive and user-friendly design. Travelers who have not yet registered may complete both registration and immigration clearance simultaneously during their first use, with the entire process taking as little as 10 seconds. Travelers aged 10 or above and at least 120 centimeters in height—including Taiwanese nationals holding chip-enabled passports and foreign nationals holding valid Republic of China (Taiwan) residence certificates—are eligible to use this convenient service. At present, a total of 121 new generation e-Gate lanes have been installed at Taoyuan International Airport, Taipei Songshan Airport, Taichung International Airport, Kaohsiung International Airport, and Kinmen Shuitou Harbor. Eligible travelers are encouraged to make greater use of the service and experience smart, fast, and user-oriented immigration clearance.
Prepare Before You Go—Conscripts Traveling Overseas Should Take Note
The NIA also reminded travelers that during the Lunar New Year travel peak, they are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours in advance and to make use of self-service check-in kiosks and automated baggage drop facilities to expedite boarding and immigration procedures. Before departure, travelers should ensure that their passports have a remaining validity of at least six months and reconfirm ticket and flight information to avoid any disruption to travel plans. In addition, effective January 1, 2026, males born in 2007 have reached statutory conscription age. Those with conscript status who have not yet fulfilled their military service obligations are required to apply for approval in accordance with the law before traveling overseas. The NIA urges the public to pay close attention to these requirements.
