The AI Wave Sweeps in as the 2025 Border Management Seminar Grandly Opens On the 25th, the Ministry of the Interior's National Immigration Agency (NIA) held its 15th Border Management Seminar at the Hyatt Regency Taoyuan International Airport. This seminar was a concerted effort with the Mainland Affairs Council, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications' Tourism Administration, Taoyuan International Airport Corporation, and the Ever Rich Foundation, and was supported by the Project for “Integrating Bilingual Elements into the Immigration Document Inspection Services and Border Management Seminar” a joint project of the National Development Council and the NIA. The Australian Consul–Airline Liaison Officer, officials from the Canada Border Services Agency, and approximately 180 representatives from domestic and international government agencies, airlines, and expert organizations convened to engage in in-depth discussions on the integration of cutting-edge technologies and biometric identification systems into border management.

Smart Borders Begin with Tech-Driven Governance

Presiding over the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister of the Interior Tang-An Wu underscored that cross-border passenger volume has returned to pre-pandemic levels following the lifting of travel restrictions. This resurgence, however, also brings mounting pressure on border inspection operations and escalates the risk of human smuggling and unlawful entry, he said. In light of these concerns, Deputy Minister Wu emphasized that the strategic integration of technology to reinforce manpower and combat illicit activities has emerged as the greatest challenge for border authorities around the world. In line with emerging technology trends, this year's seminar marked a milestone as AI technology took center stage for the first time, sparking dialogue on its potential benefits and challenges of integrating it into border management.

The NIA's current fourth-generation e-Gate system provides faster biometric recognition, a more user-friendly AI-powered interface, and voice guidance in forty languages, creating a more seamless experience for all travelers. The NIA plans to continue expanding inter-agency collaboration and international partnerships to develop a predictive, real-time, and smart border management system.

Ubiquitous AI: From Clearance Services to Border Enforcement

To advance smart border management and improve clearance efficiency, a technology showcase was held adjacent to the primary seminar venue. A diverse group of domestic and international technology firms were invited to showcase their latest innovations, such as smart e-gates and biometric identification systems. These innovative solutions, applicable to both traveler identification and crew-only passage, exhibited significant scalability and potential for cross-border collaboration, thereby promoting international exchanges and technical cooperation.

1 + 1 > 2: Strong Alliances Maximize Impact

Deputy Minister Wu highlighted the multifaceted nature of border management, emphasizing its function as both a welcoming gateway and a crucial security measure. He noted that courteous and professional passport control services enhance Taiwan's image as a nation of etiquette, while simultaneously underscoring the vital role of border control officers in safeguarding national security and preventing illicit activities from entering Taiwan.

In addition to focusing on border management technologies, this seminar deepened cooperation between the Taiwanese government and its international partners. The NIA will continue to cultivate international partnerships, adopt innovative technologies, and implement agile border management strategies to ensure border security, service excellence, and operational efficiency.
