Outbound Travelers Experiencing the Next-Generation e-Gate System Eligibility Lowered to 10 Years Old and 120 cm in Height; R.O.C. Nationals Without Household Registration Also Eligible

The National Immigration Agency (NIA) has announced a significant update to the e-Gate (automated immigration clearance system) eligibility criteria. Starting January 1, 2025, the minimum age for applying to use e-Gate will be lowered from 12 to 10 years, and the height requirement will be reduced from 140 cm to 120 cm. Additionally, R.O.C. nationals without household registration who hold a valid R.O.C. e-passport will also be eligible to apply for e-Gate services.

The next-generation e-Gate system integrates registration and clearance processes into a single step. Users can complete facial recognition registration and, optionally, fingerprint capture directly at the gate, enabling seamless registration and clearance in one session. The NIA encourages eligible individuals to experience the efficiency and convenience brought by this advanced technology.

Nationwide Deployment of Next-Generation e-Gates to Boost Efficiency

To enhance entry and exit services for travelers, the NIA is actively implementing the next-generation e-Gate systems across major airports and ports. By the end of 2024, 49 new e-Gates will be operational at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, the nation’s primary international gateway. Furthermore, an additional 27 e-Gates are planned for installation at Kaohsiung, Songshan, and Taichung airports, as well as the newly constructed Kinmen Shuitou Commercial Port Passenger Service Center, during 2025.

Upon completion, all legacy e-Gates will be phased out to accommodate the growing volume of travelers and provide a superior clearance experience. Director-General Bill Chung of the NIA emphasized that, starting next year, nationals aged 10 or older and at least 120 cm tall with a valid e-passport can utilize the next-generation e-Gates for rapid clearance. With a processing time as short as 10 seconds, the system promises a swift and hassle-free border crossing experience. The NIA warmly invites the public to take advantage of this innovative service.
