Self-enrollment for Automated Immigration Clearance System (e-Gate) Has Officially Launched

On October 13, 2022, border restrictions of Taiwan had been lifted by the R.O.C. government after 2 years of COVID-19 pandemic. Following the National Immigration Agency’s (NIA) introduction of the self-enrollment for Automated Immigration Clearance System (e-Gate) on November 1, nationals above 12 years old but have not applied for e-Gate enrollment, may use the e-Gate upon arrival and/or departure as well as enroll by themselves now. Foreign residents with multiple re-entry permits on their ARC/APRC are also eligible. Enrollment is valid for life and offers a more convenient way to clear immigration.

Since the first-generation e-Gate was established by the NIA in 2011, there has already been 7.63 million nationals who have enrolled into the e-Gate program. The accumulative number of clearances via e-Gate is also now approaching 100 million. Meanwhile, the NIA has been installing the third-generation of the e-Gate system in international airports and seaports since 2020. The third-generation features both upgraded biometrics and the verification procedures of passport chips. Now that the enrollment and clearance will be completed at once, eligible travelers can have their first enrollments done once the system verifies their e-passports and takes their facial image and fingerprints.
