 Question 1:

What is the Working Holiday program?


 Answer 1:

  1. The Working Holiday program is an agreement between two countries that makes it possible for their young people to expand the mutual understanding of each otherˇ¦s culture while giving them experience of living in a foreign country. The Working Holiday program let young travelers visit and tour the country for a period, during which they are permitted to earn their living expenses by working.

 Question 2:

What is the difference between a Working Holiday Visa and a Resident Visa issued to people permitted to work in Taiwan?


 Answer 2:

  1. A Resident Visa issued to people permitted to work in Taiwan is granted for the primary purpose of employment, while a Working Holiday Visa is issued mainly to tourists who may work to supplement traveling expenses. Furthermore, the perspective applicants and the conditions for the applications for both visas are also different.

 Question 3:

Is there any limit to the number of applications a Japanese may file for a Working Holiday Visa?


 Answer 3:

  1. The key condition for the application of a Working Holiday Visa is that the applicant has never had obtained a Working Holiday Visa before. Those who had been issued a Working Holiday Visa may not apply again.

 Question 4:

What is the age limit on the application for a Working Holiday Visa?


 Answer 4:

  1. When applying, the applicant must be between 18 (included) and 30 (included) years old.

 Question 5:

I will be 31 years old in 3 months. Am I eligible to apply? If I still may apply, will the age issue cause the duration of stay to be shortened?


 Answer 5:

  1. Since you are not yet 31 years old, naturally you are still eligible. Once the application is approved, your duration of stay in Taiwan will not be affected.

 Question 6:

Is a Japanese living oversea (i.e. outside Japan) eligible to apply?


 Answer 6:

  1. No. One of the conditions for applying is that the applicant must be residing in Japan. Therefore, a Japanese living oversea may not apply.

 Question 7:

I am currently studying in Taiwan and I am about to graduate in 2 months. Can I apply for the Working Holiday Visa?


 Answer 7:

  1. The applicant must be residing in Japan in order to apply. You may submit your application after you have graduated and returned to Japan.

 Question 8:

I am married. Am I eligible to apply?


 Answer 8:

  1. Yes. However, your Working Holiday Visa does not grant entry for your family; they need to obtain other visa for entry.

 Question 9:

Where and when can I apply for the Working Holiday Visa?


 Answer 9:

  1. Applications may be submitted beginning from June 1, 2009 to the NIA representative office, and its branch offices in Yokohama, Osaka, Fukuoka and Naha.

 Question 10:

Do I have to apply in person?


 Answer 10:

  1. You must present your application in person to the service counter. The application may not be filed through mail, fax, Internet or a proxy.

 Question 11:

Is an interview necessary during the application? Will the application be rejected if I can speak only Japanese?


 Answer 11:

  1. You may be given an interview when it is deemed necessary by the application reviewer; however, language problem is generally not a cause for rejection.

 Question 12:

What is the processing time for the application?


 Answer 12:

  1. Typically, if the application is submitted in the morning, the visa will be issued in the morning of the next day; this does not include a possible delay due to special circumstances.

 Question 13:

If the number of applicants exceeds the quota, what are the measures to deal with it?


 Answer 13:

  1. Currently the annual quota for the issuance of Working Holiday Visas is 2000. The measures for handling the excessive applications are not yet determined.

 Question 14:

IDoes an employer still have to apply for work permission to the Council of Labor Affairs of the Executive Yuan to employ foreigners who have entered Taiwan with a Working Holiday Visa?


 Answer 14:

  1. No. According to Article 4 of the Regulations for the Permission and Administration of the Employment of Foreign Workers, foreigners who have obtained a Working Holiday Visa are deemed as having obtained a work permit, and therefore employers do not have to apply for work permission to employ them.

 Question 15:

Does Taiwan provide young people under the working holiday program in Taiwan with any favorable benefit?


 Answer 15:

  1. The National Youth Commission of the Executive Yuan has set up the ˇ§Taiwan Trekking for Young Travelersˇ¨ website to provide related travel information on study tours and scenic spots in Taiwan. There are also travel services targeting young people, such as the free applications for Youth Travel Card (enjoying discounts over 500 different travel packages), free Digital Tour Buddy (free cell phone rental), Youth Guest House (discount rate around $NT 500 each night per bed), Tour Buddy (free travel guide) and TR Pass (rail discount coupons), etc. For more details please visit the ˇ§Taiwan Trekking for Young Travelersˇ¨, address: http://youthtravel.tw

 Question 16:

I have entered Taiwan with a Working Holiday Visa. How do I apply for an extension if the 180-day duration of stay of the visa is about to expire? How long is the extension? Where do I apply?


 Answer 16:

  1. If an extension is needed when the 180-day duration of stay of the Working Holiday Visa is about to expire, you can apply for an extension within 15 days before the Visa expires. Please bring your original passport and visit your local NIA service center Fill out an application form Link, and provide the actual address of your residence. Generally, a 180-day extension will be granted free of charge but the extension will not exceed the valid date of the passport.

 Question 17:

Does the Taiwan government provide people under the Working Holiday program in Taiwan with any assistance in landing a job?


 Answer 17:

  1. No.

 Question 18:

After arriving in Taiwan, am I restricted to live at certain places only?


 Answer 18:

  1. No, but please pay attention to your personal safety.

 Question 19:

Are there issues to be aware of while working in Taiwan?


 Answer 19:

  1. There is basically no restriction on what kind of job you can work for. However, working in a sex related establishment is forbidden.

 Question 20:

Please recommend some tourist attractions in Taiwan.


 Answer 20:

  1. Taiwan has plenty of scenic spots that are popular with tourists. The Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has a website in multiple languages at: http://taiwan.net.tw/ that can provide related travel information.
